Go Vote, Texan!

Today is Go Texan Day here in Houston, Texas. Yep, it is a real day as proclaimed by our mayor and many mayors before him. Go Texan Day has been a real thing since the 1950s in Houston and surrounding cities. Historically, the Friday before the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo begins, when there are real cowboys in town, everyone dresses up in cowboy duds or Western wear, and goes to work or school. Well, everyone might be an overstatement, but certainly most of the children in schools are dressed that way.

Today is the day you have a built-in excuse to wear jeans, your boots, and hat, and so on, but if you know anything about Texas (or think you do) Texans don’t need a specific day to feel special and proud of our state. #TexasProud became an internationally recognized hashtag following the harrowing days of Hurricane Harvey, but the pride has always been there, at least as far as I can tell in the 30-plus years I have been living here.

Go Texan Day falls on Day 4 of early voting here in Texas. The Lone Star State provides for nearly two full weeks of early voting before the official primary election day on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. In addition, there are many municipal/city elections on May 5, 2018, and Texas’s regular state (and federal) election date this year is November 6, 2018.

The last day of early voting for the primary election is Friday, March 2, 2018. It is worth the time and effort to go early to avoid lines, and luckily there are Saturday hours. One of the joys of early voting is you can vote at any early voting location in the county where you are registered. You can visit the Texas Secretary of State website and put some basic information in to find out if you are registered and eligible to vote here.

If you are registered in Harris County, Texas, you can go to this website to find early voting locations.

If you read my previous blog regarding the changes to our Texas Constitution and the new provisions affecting Texas home equity loans, then you may understand why this blog is about Go Texan Day and early voting. Please get up, get out, and do your bit to participate in our state government. Your vote will affect lives in so many ways: from teachers to law enforcement and state funds to oil and gas. Doubt me? Visit this website to check out the different state and municipal positions voters in Texas will be heard on in 2018.

Some of the men and women you will vote for will go to Washington D.C., some to our state capital, and some will keep criminals off the streets to keep you and yours safe. What could be more Texan then speaking your mind by casting your vote? Our firm represents several cities comprised of hard-working people in positions they attained by being elected by voters. Those elected officials work hard and are proud to get your vote. Make your voice heard, Go Texan and be #TexasProud; get out and vote.
